Cultural Orientation – Pilot Program

Cultural Orientation Program

TUC held its first Cultural Orientation Program - the first of many being led by Biripi leaders and Elders. The session was an immersive, place-based learning experience held on Biripi Country. Through storytelling, cultural knowledge sharing, and honest conversations, participants were encouraged to reflect on history, consider its continuing impacts, and explore their own role in contributing to a more respectful and just future.

Comments from participants

"The conversations and details shared today would not come up in any other space, these sessions are so valuable as they provide the means to truly value the Elders' knowledge."

"I thought the day was excellent! A good mix of education as well as local storytelling."

"After today, I feel our typical Acknowledgement of Country is not strong enough - it should include an apology."

"Today's session affirmed how vital it is that we all hear real stories from the traditional custodians about their ancestral lands and how Australian policies impacted on them - it was great."

"I really got a lot out of this and felt the format of being at TUC in the morning and going out to Saltwater was the perfect way to finish the day."
