The Oorala Aboriginal Centre was established in 1986 and exists to service, support and guide all Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students enrolled at the University of New England (UNE). The centre coordinates a variety of programs and services that improve your experience and success at university, and becomes your community away from home. To further enhance Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student success the Oorala Aboriginal Centre also engages with communities and schools to provide opportunities for pathways to UNE.
We are currently seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified persons interested in casual employment in the following fields:

About the role

The purpose of this position is to provide academic support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students currently enrolled in a unit of study at UNE. The incumbent will provide advice and guidance to support students become independent learners by developing reading, writing and study skills to improve their academic performance. Academic support is predominantly conducted online utilising online meeting platforms such as Zoom, Skype for Business and Microsoft Teams. Consistent with the UNE decadal strategic plan, the role will seek to build the aspiration, capability and educational attainment of individuals to strengthen the local community and region.

Note:
As a partner with UNE, Taree Universities Campus (TUC) is assisting to promote this opportunity. 

Local TTA tutors employed by UNE are eligible to access to the TUC Campus, facilities and team, as a resource for supporting their work with UNE students, with the objective that targeted face-to-face support might ideally be offered and expanded locally.

Mandatory requirements for the role

Skills & Experience
- Completion of a Degree; and
- Demonstrated ability to work with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people; and
- Demonstrated experience or ability, to provide academic support and mentoring to a University student; and
- Demonstrated high level communication skills and inter-personal skills; and
- Demonstrated advanced word processing skills and knowledge of other relevant software including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Teams, Outlook), Zoom and Skype

Additional information

The position pays $54.64 per hour. The hours per week could vary to suit the incumbent and the teaching needs throughout the trimester.
It is a requirement that applicants hold full-time work rights for the term of the casual contract. UNE will not provide sponsorship for this position.

- A current Working with Children Check (preferred but not essential) 


Once we receive your registration, it will be assessed by Oorala Management. Those registrations that are assessed as suitable will have their registration accepted. This essentially places you in a pool of potential tutors. Unfortunately this does not guarantee any tutoring work as this is determined solely by the variety and number of student applications we receive. But to be registered is essential to be considered for a role.
