Local Mum Completes Nursing Degree Right Here on the Mid Coast
Taree mother-of-two Carly Walker is reaching the completion of her Bachelor of Nursing with Charles Sturt University, marking a significant personal and professional milestone. Her achievement is particularly notable given she left school before Year 12 and managed to undertake her degree without ever having to move away from the Mid Coast.
Carly began her journey as a mature-age student in 2022. After working as a dispensary and Webster pack technician, she discovered a passion for supporting people that went beyond pharmacological care, prompting her decision to pursue nursing.
A Local Solution for Regional Students
By studying with the support of Taree Universities Campus (TUC) in partnership with Charles Sturt University (CSU), Carly was able to balance her studies with raising her two children and working. The local hub eliminated the need for costly travel and accommodation usually associated with out-of-area placements.
“I chose to study through TUC alongside Charles Sturt as they provided a local space with great study facilities and offered support for local students, including assistance with accessing on-campus learning and placements.
I have been able to complete my required workplace learning hours within various local hospitals, which not only helped me balance family and study but also reduced the costs that can be associated with travel and accommodation for out-of-area placements.”
Reflecting on her journey, Carly noted that the support she received was pivotal. "It made online university education far more achievable... and the facilitators have been amazing.”
Carly is set to join the local healthcare workforce, continuing her commitment to the community she calls home. Her story stands as a powerful example of how accessible local education can empower regional residents to build fulfilling careers right where they live.
