Connecting Careers and Communities on the Mid Coast
On Tuesday, 5 May 2026, Taree Universities Campus hosted the official launch of the Human Library, a transformative new initiative designed to bridge the gap between young people and the diverse career opportunities thriving right here in our local area.
Held from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm, the event introduced the community to a unique digital resource: a growing collection of video stories featuring real-life career journeys from Mid Coast professionals. Unlike traditional libraries where you borrow books, the Human Library allows students and career-seekers to "borrow" a person to hear firsthand experiences, navigated challenges, and gain insights into various industries.
A Diverse Array of Journeys
The launch featured a panel of four local professionals who shared their unique paths to success, demonstrating that there is no single formula for a fulfilling career:
Narelle Campbell, a TUC Board member, recounted her remarkable transition from high-pressure media roles to leadership in one of the world’s most isolated environments as a Station Leader for the Australian Antarctic Division. Her story highlighted the power of listening, observation, and empathy — skills honed through her studies in counselling and NLP — as essential tools for leadership and mentoring.
Trent Chapman, owner of Local Pest Experts, spoke about authentic leadership and the vital role small businesses play in fostering community belonging. His experience underscored the importance of treating every team member as an individual and the economic and social opportunities created by local enterprise.
Alex Cudlin, founder of Aussie Bike or Hike, illustrated the power of resilience and unconventional paths. From winning two World Championships as a professional motorbike racer to building a global adventure-tour company, Alex shared how "street-school" business lessons and a willingness to "have a go" transformed a personal passion into a thriving enterprise.
Meredith Paige, a freelance marketing consultant and website designer, shared her journey of balancing remote work for small businesses with full-time family travel. Having called Tuncurry home since 2014, Meredith offered insights on adaptability, overcoming imposter syndrome, and building a purpose-driven career in the creative industries.
Why It Matters
During the panel discussion, each contributor reflected on why they chose to participate in the Human Library. They emphasized the importance of providing tangible proof that thriving careers can begin and flourish on the Mid Coast. By sharing their stories of challenges, values, and triumphs, they aim to spark curiosity, courage, and connection in the next generation.
Whether you are a student navigating your next step or a professional guiding others, the Human Library serves as a living resource to inspire confidence in local potential.
Looking Forward
The launch event was attended by Human Library participants, local teachers, careers advisors and more, with many expressing gratitude for the opportunity to connect with such a diverse range of role models. Light refreshments were enjoyed as attendees engaged in meaningful conversations about the future of work in our region.
TUC extends its sincere thanks to all the Human Library participants thus far, for generously sharing their time and wisdom. We are proud to champion this initiative and look forward to seeing how the Human Library continues to grow, connecting more young people with the incredible opportunities that await them on the Mid Coast.
